Differences Between Turbine Flowmeters and Vortex Flowmeters

I. Working Principle and Structure of Flowmeters

Turbine Flowmeter: Relies on the fluid impacting the turbine blades to generate rotation; the rotation speed is proportional to the flow velocity, and the flow rate is calculated by detecting the rotation speed using an electromagnetic sensor. The structure includes a turbine, bearings, a flow guide, and a transmitter. Due to the presence of rotating parts, wear and tear are prone to occur.

Vortex Flowmeter: When fluid flows through a triangular prism vortex generator, Kármán vortices are generated alternately; the vortex frequency is proportional to the flow velocity, and the flow rate is calculated by detecting the frequency. The structure includes a vortex generator, a detector, and a signal processing unit, with no moving parts.

II. Accuracy of Flowmeters

Turbine Flowmeter: The error range is between 0.5% and 1%, suitable for high-precision metering applications (such as trade settlement).

Vortex Flowmeter: The error range is between 1% and 2%, and the accuracy is easily affected by fluid conditions and pipe vibration.


III. Applicable Media of Flowmeters

Turbine Flowmeter: Only suitable for clean, low-viscosity liquids (e.g., water, oil); if the medium contains particles or has high viscosity, it will cause component wear.

Vortex Flowmeter: Suitable for gases, liquids, steam, and fluids containing impurities, but the measurement accuracy will decrease in low flow rate and small diameter scenarios.


IV. Pressure Loss and Installation of Flowmeters

Turbine Flowmeter: Has a larger pressure loss, and requires a straight pipe section of 10D upstream and 5D downstream during installation (D is the pipe diameter).

Vortex Flowmeter: Has a smaller pressure loss, and requires shorter straight pipe sections (5D upstream and 3D downstream), but the installation environment needs to avoid vibration.


V. Maintenance of Flowmeters

Turbine Flowmeter: Requires regular maintenance, typically every two years. Vortex flow meter: The regular maintenance cycle is once every 5 years.
